Orlando Mens Victorious in Gainesville. 27-5

February 22nd, 2009

The Orlando men travelled well to Gainesville this Saturday resulting in a 27-5 win. The game was very tight in the first half with no scoring occurring for either team. In the second half the game opened up and Orlando was first to score putting a try into the corner. Then another repeated to the same spot for the second try. Gainesville then came back to score a try making it 10-5 for Orlando. The men dug deep and realized they needed to play all 80 minutes of the game and went to work putting in three more.
Man of the match Alex Myers.

There is no game scheduled for next week but practice will be the usual Tuesday and Thursday 7:30pm at Cady Way park to prepare for our next game, away, against Jacksonville. It is sure to be a test for Orlando’s new spirit on the field.

Orlando use Speed and Quick ball to blow out Old Red Eye 42-3

February 9th, 2009

It was what Orlando has been looking for all season; a game that allowed backs and forward to work in open territory and link several phases together to score. It was the Orlando back line scoring all the tries but they were created by good forward movement from the pack. Center James Wilson was able to find gaps in a Brevard backline that was as lost as an Easter egg. Wilson accounted for 3 tries himself. Man of the match went to Jason Granich for his territorial kicking and offloading from the 10 position. Orlando has a bye week this Saturday before heading to take on Gainesville away.

Orlando Area Players U18 & U20 Represent Club and State vs Top Agentina’s San Luis Club

February 2nd, 2009

A total of 7 Orlando area players were selected to represent Florida U-18 and U-20 against one of Argentina’s top clubs San Luis. Three Orlando U-18 Warriors and two East Side All Blacks U-18 (Jonel Ley-Soto and Justin Rodrigues) represented the Florida Thunder, a developmental academy of select rugby players, and there clubs admirably in a close lose to the touring side. Anthony Marino and Alex Myers, former Orlando Warriors and current Orlando Griffons, represented the U-20 Florida Thunder against the age grade San Luis club. In total San Luis had 8 members that are considered Pumas, representatives of Argentina’s U-18 and U-20 national team, and were a very worthy adversary. The U18 Thunder lost 27-24 and the U-20 score was not immediately available.

It was clear in watching both games that all Orlando participants performed exceptionally well and played major roles in their teams success. They are products of youth rugby development here in central Florida. Congrats all on representing not only your state and country well, but ORFC and its youth program affiliates.

Orlando Plays a Defensive Game against Tampa Krewe

February 1st, 2009

orlando-tampa-game1

The Orlando Men’s team travelled with very light numbers to Tampa on Saturday with a determined team. Through the first half they battled to keep the score to 0-10 to Tampa. As the game progressed the level of fitness showed and slowed the team to lose in the final 0-29 to Tampa. Some great hard tackling by Nate Spears was well noted as he was the man of the match. Although this was a loss, it was a great success for some players starting the first game. The team looks forward to the rest of the season and has shown some good commitment towards our new coach Jason Van Wyk. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at both practices this week to do some hard work for next weeks game at home against Brevard.
