Orlando Over Pelicans 45-7
Saturday’s a rugby day, and both Orlando Men’s and Orlando U-19 had matches this weekend. The U-19 were notified at 10am that Daytona was forced to cancel. Using this as an opportunity for training, Coach Matt Wise held an intrasquad match, and the boys played some good, solid rugby during the session. Needless to say, Orlando was victorious. ORFC Men’s hosted the Pelicans of St. Petersburg at Lorna Doone for a 2pm kickoff. Many of the Old Boys were able to attend including Steve Udodj, the Alley brothers, Ken Lindsay, Dan Klein, Russell Givens, Rick Higgins, Brendan O Mahony and many more. Orlando came out strong with brilliant ball movement from the backline, and the forwards could have conducted a clinic on fundamental counter-rucking. The ref disagreed, however, and Orlando was flagged for a number of rucking penalties. This weeks yellow card was granted to Bart Longchamp, not because he committed a foul, but because he’s just too pretty out there. Mr. JD Flynn used his red card suspension in a productive manner, to consume adult beverages on the sidelines, while making a serious effort to study the game.
A strong overall performance in the first half put Orlando up 40-0 at the half. Tries were put in by Blake Herrington (2), Will Doherty (2), Mike Shope, Eugene Louw, and Dan Gordon. The Griffins let up in the second half and coasted with one more try for a final of 45-7. 5 of 7 conversion kicks were scored by Eugene Louw on the day. Unfortunately, during the drink-up, Orlando was unable to win the boat race, but both teams were able to hold their own in the singing. The Pelicans always put in a good showing at the socials. Man of the Match was awarded to Will Doherty for his aggressive style and ability to lead the pack, as well as his two tries. Multiple tries by a forward is not only a rare feat, but counter-intuitive and shameful to the game. Honorable Mention goes out to Mario Dipola, who came in during the second half to hold down the corner at wing, making all of his tackles, and pulling out some nifty tricks by kicking and catching his own balls. Not really sure how that happened. Henry Villagra played well on his birthday, as did Jason Browning, Haus, Dan Gordon and our resident Preacher, Blake.
Orlando faces the Tampa Bay Krewe this next Saturday at Lorna Doone for a 2pm kickoff. We encourage as many Old Boys, Alumni, and fans as are able to do so to come out and support Orlando Rugby. In the initial meeting between the two clubs, Orlando was able to fight back from a 17-0 deficit to beat Krewe in overtime. No doubt, Krewe will bring the house this weekend for the rematch. This match will be THE showdown of the North Division II this season to help determine seeding against the South Division. Please make an effort to attend. The club is very appreciative of the support so far thus season and would like to continue this trend. Orlando Rugby – On the Rise!
