| Mike Hanson was born into a family of farmers and grew up in the rural upstate New York town of Chatham. After high school, Hanson attended Cobleskill College of Agriculture and Technology for a year and a half before transferring to the University of Georgia where he would meet his future wife Carol.
After graduation, Hanson went to work for Westinghouse X-Ray in Atlanta and found the Atlanta Rugby Club where he would settle in at inside center. When Westinghouse transferred him in the spring of 1970 to Orlando, he brought his love of the sport and searched for another club. Finding none, he started his own, the Orlando Rugby Football Club. In the beginning, Hanson was the coach, captain, administrator and recruiter for his fledgling club until elected officers could take over. As the club began to administer itself, Hanson relinquished authority so the club would develop and grow into the future. Only those who have founded a rugby club can begin to fathom the effort, determination and time required for such anĀ endeavor. Mike Hanson never doubted he would be successful and all those who have played and sang for the ORFC owe a debt of gratitude to their club’s founder, Michael Hanson and we honor him as the first member of the ORFC Hall of Fame. |
