Danielle Brown paid us a visit scoring 3 tries throughout the game. Kelly Bober received almost every single kick throughout the game and got into every rock imaginable. The games injuries were several but minimal.

This weekend the Orlando Women traveled to the 33rdAnnual Ft. Lauderdale Ruggerfest Tournament. The team competed in the women’s division against the Miami, Cayman Islands, and DC Furies teams for a prize of $750 and the title of Tournament Champion.
During the first game of the tournament, the women dominated the Cayman Islands winning 17 – 0 and at noon they beat Miami 45 – 0. On Sunday, the final match was played with the challenge of 15 MPH winds and Orlando Women scored 3 tries during the first half of the game 36 – 5.
Highlights of this tournament included Katy Miller scoring a try with only one boot and Ashley Mitchell running more than 50 meters to try. The team also welcomed back two veteran players Veronica McDonald and Emily Hurt for the tournament.
The Orlando Women came out of the tournament undefeated winning the $750 prize. The money will help fees associated with traveling to the DC Ruggerfest Tournament in Washington DC during April.
The women’s next match is scheduled for 11:30AM, Saturday, March 7th against the Jacksonville Sinners in Jacksonville, FL.
The highlight of Ruggerfest was a match between collegiate champion Cal-Berkley Bears and Super League champions NYAC. Prior to that Florida High School All Stars took the field as Florida North played Florida South. In total 9 Orlando area high School players were selected for the 22 man squad (3 Winter Park Warriors and 6 East Side All Blacks: Nick Bijeau, Justin Rodrigues, Kieron Lamorrisiere, Kelly McConnell, Ricky Walton and Zach Vaughn). The North won on the final play of the match scoring a try in the left corner. East Side All Black Zach Vaughn was selected Man of the Match by his coaches and peers. To sum it up, at one time Orlando U-19 players made up 65 % of the team on the field and truly showed the quality of youth rugby in the Orlando area. Congratulations to both Orlando Women for their championship and to the local U-19 players for their win, representing Orlando area rugby and its talent at Ruggerfest.
