The United States Rugby Football Foundation has provided rugby balls to over 500 teams and schools in the past six years. Now we are looking to help the individual player by providing a rugby ball to each of the 30,000 youth and high school players that are playing the game in the US.

And we are going to try to accomplish that without asking for any money from anyone. All we are asking from you is your daily vote in August.

The USRFF will be submitting a proposal called A Ball 4 All to the Pepsi Refresh Project on August 1. We are seeking their top dollar award of $250,000 and will be successful if we are one of the top two vote getters in that category at the end of the day on Tuesday, August 31. I’m sure we will be up against some very stiff competition so we are asking all of you and all of your players, teammates and friends for their help. Each person will have the opportunity to vote one time per day.

If we are fortunate enough to win the $250,000, every cent of that award will be used towards the purchase of 30,000 rugby balls.

How much better would our young rugby players be if they all had a rugby ball to call their own? How many more kids would be introduced to the sport if they saw their friends tossing around a rugby ball in the yard or park? If our rugby youth had their own rugby balls they wouldn’t have to wait for the next training session to get their hands on one to pass or kick around. If they had their own ball they would be able to pick it up and practice their skills anytime they wanted.

The Rugby Foundation will be sending out frequent reminders to those already in our database. We will also be sending out reminders to those on our Facebook and Twitter accounts. Please be patient during the month of August when you receive your reminders. By the end of the month you may never want to see another email from me but please take a few minutes to read the reminders and cast your vote for A Ball 4 All. To keep those reminders fresh, we will be featuring testimonials from many current and former US Eagles players and coaches as well as current and former internationals.

Here’s your chance to help grow the sport in the US without making a financial obligation. In addition to all of the wonderful attributes that rugby provides today’s youth like leadership, sacrifice, commitment, and teamwork, many of today’s high school players could very well be on our 2016 and 2020 US Olympic Rugby teams and future Rugby World Cup teams.

Please help us be one of the top two vote getters by forwarding this email to all your players, teammates and club mates as we will need the entire US Rugby Community’s support to be successful. Individuals can also sign up to receive our electronic newsletters by clicking here.

I thank you in advance for your support of youth and high school rugby.

Best regards,

Brian Vizard
Executive Director
United States Rugby Football Foundation

During the first game of the tournament, the women dominated the Cayman Islands winning 17 – 0 and at noon they beat Miami 45 – 0. On Sunday, the final match was played with the challenge of 15 MPH winds and Orlando Women scored 3 tries during the first half of the game 36 – 5.

Highlights of this tournament included Katy Miller scoring a try with only one boot and Ashley Mitchell running more than 50 meters to try. The team also welcomed back two veteran players Veronica McDonald and Emily Hurt for the tournament.

The Orlando Women came out of the tournament undefeated winning the $750 prize. The money will help fees associated with traveling to the DC Ruggerfest Tournament in Washington DC during April.

The highlight of Ruggerfest was a match between collegiate champion Cal-Berkley Bears and Super League champions NYAC. Prior to that Florida High School All Stars took the field as Florida North played Florida South. In total 9 Orlando area high School players were selected for the 22 man squad (3 Winter Park Warriors and 6 East Side All Blacks: Nick Bijeau, Justin Rodrigues, Kieron Lamorrisiere, Kelly McConnell, Ricky Walton and Zach Vaughn). The North won on the final play of the match scoring a try in the left corner. East Side All Black Zach Vaughn was selected Man of the Match by his coaches and peers. To sum it up, at one time Orlando U-19 players made up 65 % of the team on the field and truly showed the quality of youth rugby in the Orlando area. Congratulations to both Orlando Women for their championship and to the local U-19 players for their win, representing Orlando area rugby and its talent at Ruggerfest.

We have been getting some great turn outs and the rules are sinking in.

If in doubt, dump it…50/50 balls are high risk in touch.
Upfield momentum will win over high risk anyday.

Too old to play…..nah! if you can catch, run straight and dump the ball between two players that’s all you need to know.
Let the playmakers do the rest.

Remember when you dump the ball …clear the passage quickly and split (run) to the blind side, you may get the ball back in a hurry so be ready.

Think ….dump and split, …dump and split…..dump and split….

——————————————————————————————–
Tournament News :-)

Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Houston, Ft Lauderdale, Chapel Hill, NC….to name a few.

Not only do we have the Caymans 4th July tournament to look forward to in 2009, I have been in contact with Amy Wolfinger of Bermuda who is looking at getting touch rugby put on the rugby festival calendar for Easter 09. Bermuda touch is made up of predominantly women but guys are starting to play now.
(our problem is not enough women…girls where are you??)

On the local front, RJ Rewi from Ft Lauderdale (Touch legend) and I are working out a deal to play home and away games with Ft L over the course of a year.

Orlando Touch – US Nationals team
Guys and gals….I am ordering shirts this week.
Cost will be $20 per shirt.
Cost of tournament entry will be $20 per head as well.

Cheers
Phil

There will be no Touch Rugby get together this Sunday, 7/6, because of
the long weekend. We will resume again next Sunday, 7/13.

At present Touch Rugby is being played each Sunday from 10.00 am – 12.00
pm at Blue Jacket Park on the edge of Baldwin Park.

We have had good initial turn outs to the three sessions held so far. In
addition to getting a great cardio work out, we have been learning the
International Touch Rugby rules, terminology, techniques and strategies.
The game is very different than the pick up version of touch we are all
probably used to.

Some folks have expressed difficulty with the Sunday morning time slot
due to church or other family commitments. As a result we are
considering adding an additional night or moving it to a weeknight.
Monday (6.15 pm – 8.15 pm) is the favored night and time as it works
best with those who travel during the week for business.

If you are someone who would be interested in playing Touch Rugby if it
was available on a Monday night, please contact our Match Secretary (at
pcraig@glazingconsultants.com)

See you next Sunday
